The Biogas Plant located in G-South Ward, Worli, Mumbai, is a state-of-the-art 4.5 TPD organic waste-to-energy facility. This plant has been developed by Stree Mukti Sanghatana (SMS) under the Corporate Social Responsibility initiative of New India Assurance Co. Ltd., with the support of the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The biogas plant is strategically located within an existing Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) waste collection and management facility. It processes organic waste collected from Worli Koliwada, government schools, and nearby hotels. Waste collection and transportation are managed by Stree Mukti Sanghatana (SMS), whose workers also oversee the initial stages of waste processing.

The plant utilizes the Nisargruna Biogas Technology, developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), to efficiently convert organic waste into biogas, contributing to sustainable waste management and renewable energy generation.

Below Explained is the process used through which organic waste is converted in Energy.

Waste Processing and Pre-Digestion

Upon arrival at the facility, two SMS team members unload the waste and initiate the shredding and mixing process. A 10 HP shredder equipped with an integrated tray is used to process the waste sacks one by one. Secondary segregation is performed before feeding the waste into the shredder, and water is added in equal proportion to ensure efficient shredding.

Adding water to Pre-digester Tank

The shredded waste is then transferred to the pre-digester tank, where it undergoes aerobic digestion for seven days. An air compressor provides oxygen during the insertion of waste. After seven days, the partially digested material moves to an inlet chamber primarily used for inspection and the addition of biomass materials, such as cow dung, to enhance gas quality.

Anaerobic Digestion and Gas Generation

From the inlet chamber, the material flows into the main digester, which features a baffle-walled tank designed to retain the waste for approximately 21 days. During this period, anaerobic digestion produces methane. The digester is equipped with an FRP dome that floats as gas generation begins.

The dome has two gas outlets:
Direct Gas Utilization: One outlet connects directly to a gas stove for on-site water heating.
Gas Scrubbing and Storage: The second outlet is linked to a scrubbing system where the gas first passes through a moisture trap to remove any liquid particles, followed by an H₂S removal system. The purified methane is then stored in biogas balloons with a capacity of 50m³.

Biogas generated from the main digester contains a lot of impurities and other gases, the scrubbing system does the work of cleaning the biogas of those impurities. After which the cleaned gas is sent to a Neoprene Biogas Balloon for storage.

The capacity of Balloon is to hold ~50 m3 of filtered gas. Since the Balloon is made of a synthetic rubber, it is kept inside an enclosed room to protect it from rodents and any other natural hazards. The Balloon is hereafter connected to the Bio-Generator.

Power Generation and Energy Utilization

The stored biogas is directed to a 50 KVa Bio-genset, which generates approximately 40KW of power at 80% efficiency with a power factor of 0.8. The Bio-genset powers the plant, ensuring self-sustainability with zero external energy consumption. Any surplus energy generated is supplied to other buildings within the facility, promoting clean energy usage across the compound.

Leachate Recycling and Circular Process

After the 21-day digestion process, leachate is collected in an output tank and pumped back to the segregation and mixing area, where it is reused as mixing water. This recycling mechanism significantly reduces the plant's water dependency, enhancing the overall circularity of the waste management process.
